You Don’t Know Me Novel – My name is Lyric Johannes. I’m a she wolf in the Half Moon pack here in Colorado. I’m a smart girl. More than smart, I’m also clever enough to have everyone, including my mother and supposed father, fooled into believing I’m totally naive. Although to be fair, I don’t think the pack really knows what my mother and the Alpha have been up to for the past eighteen or so years. My mother is beautiful. Long blond hair, blue eyes. A very curvy body that she takes very good care of. She’s the Alpha’s true mate. His Goddess mate, but his Luna is his chosen mate. A week after he made Luna Diana his chosen mate, he met my mother. Luna Diana is from a strong pack. Her father the Alpha. My mother, even though she’s intelligent, is a weak wolf from a small pack that was being overrun by rogues. My father, Alpha Marco DeLong, was the Alpha that answered the call for help. He went to the Silver Crest pack and helped to train and strengthen the pack to fight the rogues.
He met my mother, and it was discovered, she was his Goddess mate. So naturally he took her back with him and set her up in a small cottage where he could be with her whenever his wolf needed. Of course, Luna Diana knew. The mate bond she had with the Alpha told on him each and every time he cheated on her with my mother. Not long after bringing my mother to the pack, she was pregnant. So too was the Luna. Damien, my half-brother and the Alpha heir, was born one week before me. My mother was so disappointed I was a girl. She didn’t give him the son. The Luna did, and that made her more superior to my mother. Which in turn caused my mother to despise me. It’s not like she abused me or anything, she just acted as though I didn’t exist! My father, the Alpha never cared. Not one day of my life did he visit or speak to me until Damien was failing in school and he inquired who was available to tutor the young Alpha for graduation.
I was called to the Alpha and pretty much ordered to help Damien pass all his classes. He was headed to Alpha college and needed high marks. When I inquired if the pack would help pay my tuition for college, he told me that pack funds could not afford to send low rank wolves to college. It was a waste of money for a wolf that was only good for domestic work. That broke me that day. That was when I resolved that I wasn’t staying here, and I would get an education, even if it meant attending a human college. I learned the truth about myself at age twelve. The Alpha had spent an afternoon sleeping with my mother. Neither remembered I was in the cottage that day. I wasn’t feeling well, so I stayed home and in my room. I had shifted to my wolf at ten. Unheard of at the time. First because I was female, and second, because I was supposed to be an omega.
Only I’m not. I’m more Alpha than my half-brother. After the session of passion, the Alpha was talking to my mother about how Damien would be a strong Alpha one day and that he should shift early being an Alpha’s son. I heard my mother ask what he thought about me, and I heard him laugh. “Her? Christine, she’s nobody! You’ll be lucky if our daughter shifts at all! She’s weak and stupid. Sometimes I wonder if she really is my child.” Which caused my mother to blubber, because she would never cheat on him. So… that’s how I learned who my daddy was! Shock! No! I had my suspicions. The Luna hated me.
Even snarled at me. The other kids my age ignored me. No one talked to me, except teachers. Then eventually Damien, because I was helping him to make higher grades to go to Alpha college. I turn seventeen in a week. Damien turns seventeen in a couple days. Graduation is the day I turn seventeen and I’m gifting myself with a big good bye. To all of it! … My mother showed up this morning with a very pretty dress for me to wear for graduation. It’s stupid really, because there will be no celebration for me afterwards, and I’ll be wearing a gown over it with the school colors. No one will see it! But she insists I wear it. After all, her parents have traveled to see their only granddaughter graduate. All this is laughable. They never even called to wish me a happy birthday! But then here it is. My birthday and mom is trying to dress me up like a little princess. Gag me! I shower, then put the stupid thing on. I slip on the shoes she brought also and tuck my hair up in a high pony.
This will be the day that everyone sees me. My crystal blue eyes are the color of azure. Bluer than even my mother’s. I never wear makeup, but today I put mascara on my eyes to highlight them. So, when I look at my father, he will see my eyes. He’ll know I am serious. I step out of my tiny room and present myself to my mother. She squeals and claps her hands excitedly. “Oh Lyric! You have truly turned into a beauty!” The first EVER compliment my mother has given me. I hear a scoff behind her and pear over her shoulder. The Luna is standing there with a scowl. “Thank you, mother. Now I must go. I have much to do to help with the ceremonies” I gave her a very brief hug. Nodded at the Luna then made my escape to the school gym. “Lyric.” Mr. Marshall approached me. He had smile on his face. He handed me a small, wrapped box. “Happy birthday Lyric.” He patted my shoulder. I was tickled that he remembered. I pulled the bow off and peeled back the shiny paper.
Inside the box was a delicate watch. I pulled it out and he helped me put it on. “I took it to a witch and had her spell it for you so it will disappear and reappear when you shift.” He said softly. This startled me. I didn’t even know he knew about Sadie. He winked. “T have Known about her for a long time my dear. He whispered. She is a fine wolf. You have a true Alpha wolf. She is strong and kind. When you start your own pack, please invite me. I’ll join in a heart attack!” He continued in a hushed voice so as not to attract attention. Then he moved away from me.I continue hanging streamers with helium balloons. At three in the afternoon, it was time to go backstage and get our caps and gowns on. I had just finished the last snap when Alpha Marco stepped with the Luna and congratulated everyone on a job well done. He did not even look my way or offer a happy birthday.I shrugged to myself and said to Sadie. ” Business as usual for the Alpha.” Sadie snickered.
“Yes, until we show him what he has missed out on and lost.” The diplomas were called alphabetically. Of course, Damien carrying the DeLong name was called before me. Then I was supposed to give the valedictorian speech and then we were to be dismissed. Only I planned to dismiss everyone. I walked proudly across the stage and not a clap or cheer was heard. Par for the course. My mother didn’t even acknowledge me or smile my way, and yes, I noticed. After Damien had received his diploma, he was allowed to sit with the Alpha and Luna on the stage. I took my diploma and carried off to the other side of the stage and waited to be called for my speech. I noticed a very enticing scent float across my nose. Wild berries and chocolate. It was coming from the stage. It was coming from Damien. “Mate” Sadie whispered in my head.
“What! Ewe! No Sadie! He’s, my half-brother!” I was disgusted. “Well apparently not! Perhaps there was another rooster sneaking into the hen house while the Alpha was occupied by your mom.” Sadie answered back. I chuckled. “Well go figure!” The superintendent stepped up to the podium and announced me. I plastered my fake smile on my face and moved to the podium. I looked out at all the faces of my classmates and teachers. Mr. Marshall gave me a thumbs up.I grinned at him. “Hello fellow graduates of Half Moon high school. As you heard, my name is Lyric Johannes. Not that any of you know me, but that’s okay because I know each and every one of you. I have lived alongside all of you my entire life. I have orbited around you and have watched all your interactions and heard all your secrets.
I have witnessed your misdeeds and am well aware of the injustices that this pack is capable off. My name is Lyric, and I am the daughter of Christine Johannes and Alpha Marco DeLong.”I wait as everyone breaks out is disbelief. My father rises from his chair to try and stop me. I whirl around on him and growl loudly. ” Sit down father!” I bark out in an Alpha voice. He stops in shock. I turn to the crowd. “I am only going to say this once. I am not a nobody. I am an Alpha’s daughter. That Alpha!” I point at my father. “The same man that has had both his Luna and fated mate for years! He cheated his Luna and his pack. He has ignored and tried to hide me away with the assistance of my mother. But no more. I reject both my parents. Alpha DeLong and Christine Johannes. I reject this pack and all your deceitful ways. I am out of here.” I stripped off the gown and took off my cap. I stood before my father, and he stared into my eyes in anger. ‘I’m done with you father.” Damien stood up and started walking towards me. He had lust in his eyes, and I knew he recognized me as his mate.
I stuck my hand up and told him to stop. His father looked at him in confusion when he heard him say “Mate.” “Yeah, no! Not going to happen.” I looked directly at Damien. “I Lyric Johannes reject you Damien DeLong as my mate. I will not be stuck in this pack.” Damien grabbed at his chest and howied. The Luna grabbed him and neiped to support him. “Makes you wonder how he can be my mate, doesn’t it father? Perhaps he’s not your son? Maybe when you were off being all lovey Dovey with Christine the Luna had her own midnight caller.” He growled and then his eyes darted to the Luna and saw her dip her head in shame. I whirled to the pack. ” Goodbye!” Then I allowed my huge white wolf to take over. We sailed over the heads of those standing in front of the stage and flew out of the gym and darted for the forest. My big paws eating up ground and making a nice path through the trees and up into the mountains and forest. I located the hollowed-out tree that I had hid my duffle bag and large backpack. I shifted long enough to slip the backpack on then shifted back, grabbed the bag up into my mouth and took off for the border of the pack. I had chosen the path of least resistance.
Fewer patrols because of the rocky incline. Not that I really thought anyone would try to stop me, but my father had just seen my wolf and now knew she was a strong white wolf and an Alpha too. I was not going to be dragged back into his pack. I crossed over and turned. Looking back. I grinned nodded my head and said one more time. “I Lyric Johannes reject the Half Moon pack.” I didn’t feel anything, but then again I was never really claimed by them. I turned around and headed north. Towards my new life. … I’ve been working for Maggie now for a week. It’s actually fun! The local folks are very friendly and often leave good tips. I even get along well with Denise. She’s just younger than me, but humans don’t really consider us mature enough to be on our own. It’s a good thing I have already graduated and am on my way to college. Otherwise, I think Maggie would try to get me enrolled in school with her niece. I have been treated very well and could even say I made friends with the folks here in this town. I realize though that they can’t know about my wolf, so we have kept Sadie on lock down. My only goal is to earn enough to get going again. I did manage to call Mr. Marshal.
He informed me that my father ordered DNA on Damien. They are waiting for the results. In the meantime, he has moved my mother into the pack house and sent the Luna back to her father’s pack. He hasn’t rejected her as yet, but it’s being whispered. Mr. Marshal also said that the Alpha has asked local packs to keep an eye out for me. He wants me back in the pack because of my rare wolf and her size. Also, because he recognized her Alpha attitude. Now he wants to be my father. What a joke! He did say that my mother has been tearful and has asked my former teacher several times if he has heard from me, and did I say where I was going. Of course, he wouldn’t say. He did advise me to contact the high council. That if I don’t and my father should find me before, then I may never get that chance again, because he fears my father would make me a prisoner and leach my wolf for power. So, I have written a letter and have mailed it to make sure that the high council is aware that there are issues with the Half Moon pack, and the Alpha is shady. I managed to get a map and have charted my track to New York. It’s still a long way to go, but as I move across the states it gets hilly and more trees.
So keeping off the grid will be easier for me and Sadie. There are also a couple packs that Mr. Marshal pointed out that will assist me. I look at my watch. Time to head to the diner and start work. I’m on my own tonight. Denise has a date. Maggie grins as I walk in. “Wish I had your energy child! I’m pooped just watching you! When you told me you’ve been hitch hiking to get there I about died. You really should look into taking a bus.” I looked at her. “A bus? Does one come here to Hazen?” I asked. “Well, no, but I could give you a ride to the closest depot. You could get your ticket and be on your way. Easy!” She grinned. “How much will I need?” I was really thinking about this. I needed a way to get there where my father couldn’t track me, and being among the humans wouldn’t cross his mind. He’d think I’m rogue and wondering from pack to pack.
“Tell you what. You write down where that college is that you’re headed to, and I’ll make inquiries for you and get a schedule and cost.” “Okay Maggie. I appreciate that.” “Lyric!” Old man Charlie called out. “You want to put some coffee in this cup? Seems it sprung a leak and went empty.” I grabbed the coffee and went to fill his cup. He gave me a toothless grin and swatted my butt. His little tick. Actually, he was a cute old man and always left me a good tip. Maggie said good night and I took over and helped with clean up and lock down. Walking back to the motel I breathed in the fresh air. I’ll really miss this place. It’s the first time in my life that I’m actually seen. It feels good to be appreciated.
