I Wasn’t Her Novel – I had a miscarriage when I caught my husband cheating on me with his secretary Alissa. My friend said show me something interesting.”Here we are.” he said. There were two people having intercourse on the bed. The woman was on top riding her partner. The man moaned, “Alissa~”making me stop completely. That voice. That wedding band. A few seconds after, Alissa fell over the man and it was none other than my husband. He was cheating on me with his secretary. I stumbling down the stairs but I didn’t make it very far because of the pain. “You’re bleeding.”my friend said. Looking down, a red stain marked my dress. I had a miscarriage. That jerk killed his child with his own hands. I will make them go to the infernal!
She looked at her husband with anger but he couldn’t even face her. The pain, the humiliation, the anger and most of all, the betrayal. Her eyes filled with tears as a lump grew in her throat but she refused to let this man make her shed tears. Alaire went into her cabinet, pulling out some documents. With a low sigh, she made her way back to him. He looked down at the divorce papers her husband’s signature already there. She placed her hands on her waist, waiting for him to at least explain himself. “What do you want me to say? I- I’m not happy with you anymore.” Westly’s shoulders slumped in defeat. “So you cheat on me, betray my trust and sleep with the one woman I begged you to stay away from?!” Another long pause filled the air once again. Westly’s posture straightened, his eyes grew cold as he gazed down at her. The act finally broke. “What do you expect me to say? I’m sorry? Be real with yourself, Alaire. When was the last time we even had intercourse together? When was the last time we even held a decent conversation?!” She scoffed at his response.
“So this is my fault now-” He cut her off. “What I’m saying it that this marriage is dead and it died a long time ago. You just didn’t want to see it.” Alaire inhales deeply before responding. “You wanted this marriage to die. You didn’t want this to last because you realized that you won’t have every woman falling at your feet again-” she slowing walked to him, her eyes never leaving his, not even for a second. “You think she can give you want you desire, then be with her. I am done fighting for something, no, someone who doesn’t even give me the time of day.” Westly’s jaw clenched, his eyes darken with fury at the sight of this determined woman. “It’s never that easy with you.” He knew this woman like the back of his hand, or so he thought. “It is this time, I’ve already had my fun.” She pulled out the box she received the wedding ring in, handing it back to him. He looked at it for a few seconds before meeting her gaze again. “You want me to believe that you’re just going to give up all those years, just like that?” “You give yourself too much credit, you’re not all that. When I had you, you barely had a worth to your name and now that you do, you believe that I’m not enough for you.” He bit his lip at her comment.
Westly broke eye contact with her, taking a step back. “No, you’ve just grown old and bitter for my liking.” Her stomach boiled with anger at his words. “Old and bitter you say?” A strained laugh left her mouth as she gripped the papers in her hands. Was she really going to sign these papers? Her eyes met his once more but they were dull, there was nothing there anymore. With the last bit of strength she had, she signed the papers, tossing them at his face. “Mark my words Westly Knight, you will regret what you did to me and when that day comes, you’ll be begging me for another chance.” He clenched this rings in his hand. “Don’t hold on to that fantasy.” With those words, he turned on his heel and walked out of the house they once shared. The door slammed shot causing Alaire dropped her heavy body on a chair, trying to catch her breath. Tears poured from her eyes as her heart broke more and more. The man that she spent eight years with just walked out of her life in less than eight months.
What was she going to do? A few months earlier~ Alaire~ “And the award for breaking the record once again with her amazing and untouchable skills, Alaire Knight.” My husband stood up, smiling down at me, clapping louder than anyone else. A smile spread across my face as people around me, congratulated me once again. I have never felt more proud of myself than this moment. “She is the best Architect you can find out here.” My husband, Westly boasted taking me up to the stage. I had just broke the record for selling the most mansions in the last three years and made my company a lot of money. Making my way to the stage, I received my award and looked into the crowd of smiling faces. “Thank you all for this award, it means a lot to me and I promise to work just hard as before. Thank you.” Westly took my arm, guiding me back t my chair, whispering in my ear. “I’m so proud of you.” It brought joy to me that he was here with me today. ~ ~ “Are you serious Westly, again? You just got back, where on earth do you have to go again?” He didn’t even stop to look at me, get just kept packing his things.
“I know that I said tonight was going to be about you but baby, I need to close this deal by tonight. Your father placed a lot of trust in me to take care of you and that’s what I’m doing.” My father had a lot of money and he invested it in Westly because I fell in love with him. My father knew that Westly didn’t come from money nor did he have much so he started a business with him just to make me happy. At first, I was over the moon but now, I can’t even have him for a month straight without him running away for some business deal. “We don’t need all that money, honey, I’m doing well for myself and we have more than enough to stop working as we speak.” I folded my arms, clearly upset which he finally noticed and stopped packing. He gave a low sigh before, pecking me on my head. “Look, I know that this is unfair to us but we still have to think about our future children.” A smile appeared our faces at the thought. I really did want children with him but he was always too busy. “That’s why I’m doing this, that’s what all this is about. When our children are grown, they can have the money to open their own business. Just like my dad did for me.” It melted my heart the way he referred to his father in law like that.
“Well since you put it that way; fine.” Westly pecked my lips before returning to pack. I was still a little upset but he’s doing it for us. “Call me as soon as you reach to Paris, text me even.” He nods walking to the chauffer. “You know I will.” Westly brought me into his arms, smooching me ever so gently. “I love you with all my heart.” He said, smooching my nose. “I love you with all of mine too.” He jumped in the car, leaving me standing there. ~ ~ The next day, I sat at my desk, reviewing my schedules for the month and saw that I was assigned to Lucian Appius. His father just handed him the business almost a year back, I remember going to the ceremony with my father because Westly couldn’t make it. He’s a young, handsome bachelor, few women by his side, nothing out of the ordinary. “He wants a house? Doesn’t he have like, fifty?” “More like sixty, which is weird for him to want another one.”
My head snapped up to see Veena Anand. My assistant and long term best friend. She was curvy and hot. I wasn’t as blessed but I had my curves. “You really need to knock.” I placed the calendar aside. “I did, you were drooling over Mr. young, hot and charming.” I rolled my eyes at her. “I’m married, remember?” “You remind me every day. Plus it doesn’t hurt to look.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder, sitting on the couch. My phone buzzed and I knew it was Westly. ‘Sorry, I fell asleep when I got here.’ I smile played on my face making Veena suck her teeth as loud as she possibly could. “Would you stop? He’s a great husband.” Veena snorted, picking at her nails. “Sure, whatever you say.” I looked at her but her gaze was out the window. “What’s that suppose to mean?” She looked back at me, shaking her head. “Nothing. I just believe that someone who acts so perfect, has to have a flaw somewhere. I’m not jealous or anything but- I don’t know, I feel like he’s hiding something.” I frowned at her words. “He wouldn’t do anything to hurt me.” Veena’s eyes widened as she shook her hands. “No! Please don’t take me the wrong way! You’re right, he treats you well but-” She glanced at me. “But what?” I urged. “You- you guys don’t even go out in public together.” Veena mumbled. “We don’t go out because he’s a private person.”
“You guys had the smallest wedding, ever. I barely made the guest list” “Westly didn’t have any family and I didn’t want him to feel depressed.” “None of his friends know you-” “Do you know all Timothy’s friends?” “The ones he’s close to, yes. Plus he doesn’t even invite you to any of his business parties-” “What parties?” “You know the business parties that they have like every four, five months, it’s literally all over television. The best of the best go there.” I was silent. I have never been to one of these parties before. There has to be a reason for this, right? Veena’s eyes widened a little. “L-Look, this conversation was pointless, you know that he loves you, none of those silly little things should bother you.” I nodded blankly. “You’re right, these are trivial things, I shouldn’t let that bother me.” I then buried my head back into my work. But now that she said it out loud, it’s extremely bothering me. When he gets home, I’m going to talk to him about this. Alaire~ “He made you upset? How dare he?! That no good, crusty, dried out, bald headed-” I cut him off. “Dad! Calm down, I just wanted to come see you.” He shook his head. “I know when my baby is upset. What did he do?” I feel like a kid running to my dad with my problems.
I shouldn’t be doing this. “Tell me, or I’ll go to him myself.” He threatened. “It’s not that serious, I just feel like- dad, have you ever went to these business parties with Westly?” His eyes squinted. “Well of course I have.” So Verna wasn’t just making this up. “I always ask Westly why you’re never there but he brings up some excuse about you not being comfortable around all those people.” That was news to me. “He said that?” He nodded his head. “He said that he didn’t want to make you feel uncomfortable about around all those men-” “Uncomfortable?” “Yeah, he didn’t want to leave you in an unfamiliar place while he makes deals with other people at the party.” My heart sank a little because at this assumption. “He brings his secretary Alissa Benjamin. Sweet young woman, she really works for her money.” Alissa? I’ve only seen her a few times around him but she was really professional. “Why are you asking all these questions? Was he lying? Do I have to make someone disappear again?” He glared at me with rage in his eyes. What does he mean again? “God no, please just calm down, you might spike your blood pressure again. I was just asking because- because I told him to keep it a secret but he obviously didn’t want my father to worry too much about me.” He frowned a little but let it go. “If you say so.” I touched his shoulder.
“But I feel a little better about it now.” Dad nodded his head. “Well, I’m glad you are. There’s one coming up to celebrate Appius Domain Enterprises. Luca handed his son the business almost a year ago and stocks are through the roof, it doubled in eight months than it did in the last year.” I forced a smile, praying he didn’t see it. “Thank you for telling me, daddy.” I smooched his cheek before he stood up. “Absolutely no problem, my everything.” He took me to my car. “Well be safe, I’m going out with Luca and a few others, we’re going golfing in Iceland. We’ll be back in time for the celebration.” “Be safe and don’t let that anger of yours get the best of you. I love you.” He blew me a smooch before heading back inside. Why did he have to lie like that? What was the meaning behind that whole story? ~ ~ “That’s what he said?” Verna gasped at me, leaning over the table as she set up for our board meeting. “I don’t know what to do, Verna. Why would he make up something like that? I never said any of that before.” I stacked my papers at the podium as she placed the water bottles out.
“What do you think he’s hiding?” She grinned evilly but I was already on the verge of tears because of this. Was there a reason he didn’t want me coming? Did I embarrass him in some sort of way? Veena realized and gave me a big hug. “I’m sorry, I should have realized how much this was bothering you. I should have been more sensitive to the situation.” She soothed me. Her hand rubbed my bac gently, handing me a water. “I know that we have to get through this but it’s not the time. I need strong business woman, Alaire right now. You have to pitch this idea and it has to be flawless.” She encouraged me while rubbing my shoulders aggressively. I slapped her hand away and she quickly apologized. “You’re right. This can wait for later but right now, my job comes first.” Verna cheered quietly before opening the door for my clients. ~ ~ When I arrived home, I saw Westly’s car in the garage. Excitement ran through me but it died when I remembered I was angry at him for lying. I marched at the car, heading instead to see a candle lit dinner, soft music playing in the background, red roses on the counter.
What’s all this? I placed my bag down to feel his arms wrap around me, his scent filled my nostrils as I leaned into him. “I’m sorry for running out on you that night. Let me make it up to you.” I was angry about something, I knew I was angry, but for what? He guided me up the rose filled steps, into the bathroom, where warm, bubbly water waited for me. He stripped me undressed, his eyes never left mine, as he rubbed his rough hands all over me. “Feeling relaxed?” I lazily nodded my head. “Good.” Once he was finished, he took me downstairs, where we sat and had a meal together. “So you got him to sign?” He nodded, sipping his spirits. “It was the fastest deal I’ve made in a long time.” He grinned. “I also got a de-” He cut me off. “Oh there’s this restaurant that we have to visit when we go there next year, the food there is amazing.” “Uh, what do you mean next year?” He looked at me like I lost my mind. “For our anniversary. I said I wanted to go Paris for our ninth year.” He cut his stake, chuckling. “But we’ve been there so many times, I wanted to visit Trinidad and Tobago or maybe Jamaica.” He blew a sigh before shrugging. “We’ll see when the time comes.” Was all he said and the room went quiet. I bounced my leg, contemplating whether I should bring it up or not. “Why did you lie?” Was the first thing that came out my mouth. Westly choked on his stake, his eyes glancing at me. “W-What?” He wiped his mouth with his napkin before looking at me fully.
“What did I lie about?” He rushed out. “I was talking to my friend Veena and she brought up a point to me abou-” He rolled his eyes leaning back. “We were having such a good time and you bring up the woman that’s jealous of you?” I frowned at him. “She’s not jealous of me, she’s looking out for me.” He rolled his eyes at me. “Right and I’m the tooth fairy.” I crossed my arms at him. “Would you just listen to me?” He shook his head. “Absolutely not, I refuse to listen to anything you heard from that woman who can’t even keep a man.” I gasped at him. “She has nothing to do with this! Stop insulting her!” I never raised my voice at him before but he crossed the line. “I went to see daddy today and h-” He cut me off once more. “Did he knock some sense into you?” I blinked at his words. “Chose what you say to me next very carefully, Westly Bennet Knight.” I was livid to the point where I was shaking. I rarely get angry and he was pushing all the wrong buttons at this point. His shoulders tensed up before raising his hands in surrender. “Fine, I’m sorr-” “Daddy told me about your business parties that they hold.” I cut him off and his jaw clenched as I spoke. “He said that I told you that I was uncomfortable around those men. I don’t even remember telling you anything at all since I have never even heard of these events you go to.”
He sat there quietly. “I lied to dad about knowing everything because he was this close to killing you.” I placed my thumb and index close together as an example. “So you better tell me why that you have been lying to me all this time and you better tell me now.” He looked at me dead in my eyes. “Fine.” I took of my jacket, sitting on the chair, trying to avoid Veena’s icy glare. “Repeat to me exactly what he said?” She walked around the desk, making me face her. “I told him about the events he kept a secret from me and he said that he felt inferior to me.” She threw her hands on her head, praying in Hindi. “You actually bought that?” I frowned at her. “He said that, he wanted to make a bigger name for himself before bringing me because he wanted me to be proud of him. Isn’t that sweet?” The look on her face said something completely different. “That would never, ever happen! Your father is freaking Emmanuel Achebe! One of the richest black men alive. Do you know what else people know?” She questioned me. “They also know that you’re his daughter! One and only, might I add.” She sarcastically grinned.
“And to add to this beautiful list, is the husband no one knows she has. No one could even give a name! If people had known you were married, they would have said, ‘oh Alaire’s husband?’. So to answer your question? No matter what you do or even say, it won’t make a difference because you were born inferior to him.” I choked up a little. “That’s exactly what he doesn’t want.” She sucked her teeth. “When he married you, he should have known that this would happen. He didn’t marry to make a name for himself, he married you because he loves you, being a nobody and all. It’s your job to make him feel like somebody, not everyone else. He shouldn’t be leaving you on the side so he could look important.” She was right. ~ ~ I took my phone out calling my father. “My everything, how are you?” He said cheerfully. “Daddy, I have decided that I want to surprise Westly at the celebration. Could you tell me what day and the time please?” “That’s wonderful news! Would you like to go with me?” He asked. “No, I want to arrive there by myself, act like you don’t know anything.” He hummed over the line. “I could do that.”
